Since the early days of the web in the mid-90s, designers have been experimenting with the way websites look and feel and web pages have evolved from merely text based documents to sophisticated user interfaces. With this evolution, the disciplines that make up web design have evolved simultaneously both in number and complexity and therefore the skills demanded from a web designer. Whereas in the old days one person was able to master most of the skills that web design embodied nowadays that would be close to impossible.

Although there is a vague line between web design and web development and the terms are often confused, it is our opinion that web developers are more involved with the coding and functionality of a website or application and the web designer with the styling, feeling and “creative energy” of that site or application. It goes without saying that both go hand in hand and good coordination between developer and designer is a must.

The main skills and/or techniques that web design embodies are as follows UX design, layout design, marketing and communication design, typography design, motion graphics design, and content design.

All these areas are covered by AVDL to create great websites and web applications.

User experience design
"User experience design (UXD, UED, or XD) is the process of manipulating user behavior through usability, usefulness, and desirability provided in the interaction with a product. User experience design encompasses traditional human–computer interaction (HCI) design and extends it by addressing all aspects of a product or service as perceived by users."
LAYOUT (design)
"Page layout is the part of graphic design that deals in the arrangement of visual elements on a page. It generally involves organizational principles of composition to achieve specific communication objectives."
Marketing and communication design
"Marketing and communication design identifies what works for a site's target market. The designer(s) must identify the trends of its audience and understand the type of website he/she(they) is(are) designing (for example B2B vs a consumer website) and careful consideration must be made to ensure that the aesthetics and/or overall design do not clash with the clarity and accuracy of the content or the ease of use of the website"

So what is Web development?

"Web development is the work involved in developing a website for the Internet (World Wide Web) or an intranet (a private network). Web development can range from developing a simple single static page of plain text to complex web-based internet applications (web apps), electronic businesses, and social network services. A more comprehensive list of tasks to which web development commonly refers, may include web engineering, web design, web content development, client liaison, client-side/server-side scripting, web server and network security configuration, and e-commerce development."

NO SOCIAL NETWORKS?

Sorry, the icons look great and almost seem compulsory but we are not engaged in any social networks. Although AVDL highly recommends its customers to engage in the social networks for certain market segments and age groups we ourselves do not post on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or Youtube.

A note on social networks from Harvard Business Review:

Social platforms are still reporting robust growth — yes, even Facebook — despite a growing chorus of opposition. Social conversation continues to shape everything from culture to the media cycle to our most intimate relationships. And we now spend more time than ever on our phones, with endless scrolling through our social feeds being a chief reason why.
But dig a little deeper, and a more nuanced picture emerges about social media users today that has important implications for the ways in which brands reach customers. Specifically, when you look at who is — and more importantly, who is not — driving the growth and popularity of social platforms, a key demographic appears to be somewhat in retreat: young people. For example, 2019 findings from Edison Research and Triton Digital show social media usage overall among Americans 12 to 34 years old across several platforms has either leveled off or is waning, while 2019 research from Global Web Index suggests that the amount of time millennial and Gen Z audiences spend on many social platforms is either flat, declining, or not rising as greatly as it has in years’ past.
